How To Breakup With Your Boyfriend or Girlfriend

When it comes to breakups, it is important to take into serious consideration the other person's feelings and concerns.

Deciding to end a relationship may be one of the most difficult decisions one can make. Knowing that both your future and the future of your mate are in your hands can be stressful. No matter how eager you are to move on, take the time to seriously consider what you will say, how you will respond your partner's concerns and what type of relationship, if any, you hope to maintain with him or her.

There are many resources online designed to help you break the news, some that are not to be taken seriously, such as ordering a goodbye limerick or poem meant to be read aloud to your soon-to-be-ex. Humor is often insensitive, and it's crucial to take the other person's feelings seriously. When going about deciding upon what to say and how to say it, the telephone, email and instant message may all seem like fantastic alternatives, which allow you a sense of distance and protection. While these avenues may be easier for you, it can seem cruel and impersonal to your mate.

Talk to your significant other in person. Be honest, clear, concise and straightforward. You deserve to give your partner an honest reason as much as they deserve to hear one. Also, if the breakup is not a good one, then it gives you the opportunity to explain your motives and reasoning. If you are not sure how your significant other is going to handle the situation, then you can consider breaking the news to them in public, but be warned that this may backfire and it does not provide the privacy one expects in such a personal moment.

Remember to always remain considerate of your mate's feelings. They may be blind-sided by the whole situation and not be prepared to deal with the shock or pain. You have had plenty of time to consider your own feelings and actions, but your partner has not. Give them the opportunity to ask questions and to work through the initial trauma.

While this may be a very difficult process for the both of you, breaking the news to your significant other in person, in private and with great care is really the best way to approach a breakup.
