Online Dating 101: Using Technology for Meeting Singles
Using the Internet to find a love match is no longer taboo. This article discusses different ways to use websites for meeting singles.
If you're single and you're interested in finding someone, online dating may be one option to consider. Online dating is no longer seen as a way for people who are socially challenged to meet. Instead it's viewed as a more efficient way of dating, since you're able to get to know someone before you actually meet them. There are several different approaches to online dating.
Dating Services
Dating services would be websites like EHarmony, www.eharmony.com. These companies have their clients fill out detailed surveys, so they can find the person that would best fit their client. This approach is somewhat more of an analytical approach rather than a personal approach. Depending on how honest the person was when he or she filled out the survey may affect your results. For many of these dating services there is a service fee. However, it may be an efficient way to find potential partners, especially if you're busy with your career.
Personal Ads
Many websites like Match, www.match.com, will post descriptions of their members, which are similar to personal ads. They're more detailed than traditional personal ads in newspapers, and they don't rely on odd abbreviations that you would have to decode. Many of these personal profiles also have pictures attached, so you can find out if you would also be physically attracted to this person. Once you've found potential partners, you can send them an email. Instead of having a match making service decide on a partner for you, you decide from the available choices. Many of these websites limit the number of hits you receive from your searches by having you select your location.
Friend Websites
Lately there has been a new interest in websites like My Space, www.myspace.com, and Friendster, www.friendster.com. These websites aren't only being used to keep in contact with friends, but also as a way to meet other singles. You may not be acquainted with all of your friend's friends, but these websites allow you to view your friend's friends' profiles, which include pictures and fun facts including marital status. Instead asking your friend to find a friend for you to date, you can find a friend you like and ask your friend to introduce you to him or her, which may help you avoid some horrible blind dates.
These are few approaches to online dating. Despite what approach you decide to use, you may want to take some precautions. Some people tell other people what they want to hear, so you may not really get to know a person because he or she may be pretending. You may also not want to reveal any personal information online like your phone number or address before you meet the person. When you meet the person, you may want to make sure it's in a very public place. Although there are these precautions to take, online dating may be the way you find a good match.
