Safety Tips for Online Dating
A couple of safety tips to help make online dating a safer activity.
Today it seems that everyone is turning towards the Internet for everything, and online dating sites are popping up everywhere. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that just because online dating is becoming common, it does not mean that it is implicitly safe. The sense of anonymity and secrecy not only ups the allure, but also the risk you are taking by dating people you only know from the Internet. That is not to imply that everyone online is unsafe, but it is important to take certain precautions when deciding to participate in online dating.
One important safety tip for online dating is to take your time. Never be in a hurry to jump the gun and meet this other person. Use the advantages of the Internet to learn more about them. Chat online, get to know the person's likes and dislikes or more about their personality. Also, online dating websites, such as Match (www.match.com), suggest that you may even want to search this person online, or even go as far as to run a background check. Learn as much as you can about this other person and take your time before you meet them face-to-face - this will help to make your dating experiences safer.
Another idea to keep in mind, as reported by Psych Central (www.psychcentral.com) is to be realistic about online dating. While you may create a profile, complete with a picture that is honest and forthcoming, not everyone will plays the game by your rules. Some people exaggerate their description, or may not even use an accurate or correct photograph. You may not even realize these are exaggerations or lies until you meet and interact with this person. When it comes to online dating, it may be worthwhile to be cautious and skeptical about the people you are meeting before coming to a solid conclusion about who they are.
Lastly, if and when you do decide to meet this person, do so in public. Pick a populated area that is well lit and patrolled by police in which to have your date. You shouldn't ever place yourself in a situation that can get out of your control. Keeping the date in the eyes and ears of other people may help to keep you, and your date, safe and comfortable.
Online dating is similar to any type of dating in that you never know what to expect or how it will turn out. There advantages but also disadvantages to online dating: it provides an opportunity to get to know someone before meeting them, but, on the other hand, you are running the risk of not being exposed to the real person, or to the truth. Like any situation where you are meeting people for the first time, make sure to protect yourself and make safety your top priority at all times.
