Tips for Helping a Relationship Survive Children
Having a baby will change everything--especially your relationship. Considering the following tips may prevent these changes from being negative ones.
The dynamics of everything change for people when they have a baby. It may affect the way a couple interacts with one another once a new member joins the family. Consider these to keep your relationship intact.
While it may seem easy, keep the doors of open communication wide open. Once a baby is in the picture, autopilot may take over. Both parents will be experiencing many changes, not to mention a severe lack of sleep, both of which may take a toll on a relationship. With all the changes that may occur after the birth, you both may forget about each other and completely focus on the baby. Make sure you're able to talk with each other on a regular basis. Good communication is the foundation for all great relationships.
It is also crucial to take time for the two of you. A baby will most certainly take every moment of your time, so it's hard to walk away, even if only for a short while. If you have a strong and supportive network of friends and family, do not pass up any babysitting offers, so you and your partner can take some time to yourselves. Whether you go away for a night, go out to dinner or just lie around the house enjoying the quiet, it's important to make sure you and your partner have a chance to reconnect with each other on an adult level.
It is even more important, however, to make sure all three of you do things together as a family. This is a great opportunity for everyone to bond together. In many situations, at least early on, one parent stays home while the other continues to work, which may create feelings of imbalance in a relationship. The parent who is at home may feel overwhelmed with constant one-on-one time with the baby, and the parent who is away at work all day may feel deprived of spending time with the rest of the family. Taking an afternoon to go to the park, zoo or lunch may help the relationship between you, your partner and your child.
Having a baby most certainly changes everything, but use this opportunity as a chance to connect with one another on a higher and stronger level. Creating a family and future with one another is something you two should actively share.
