Many family members and friends may be scrutinizing of a person's career, where they live, certain personality traits (stubbornness, for example) and whom a person dates and loves. People who live a gay, lesbian, bisexual or transsexual lifestyle are all too aware of these feelings and experiences. In order to effectively deal with this situation, you should sit down and talk with your family or friends, give them the opportunity to digest your conversation and be prepared to proceed with your life, no matter what the outcome is.
No matter how nervous or uncomfortable it makes you, your family or your friends, you need to sit down with them to have a discussion. You deserve the opportunity to be straight-forward and honest with your friends and family. Whether it is explaining to your friends and family about the people you date, or if you want them to meet someone special, opening the doors of communication will be beneficial for everyone.
One thing to keep in mind is that while you have had time to digest who you are, other people may need the time to do so. While some people are wonderfully open-minded, other people may not be so readily acceptable of your dating lifestyle. For those people, they may need to sit back and absorb what you have just talked about. Make sure you do not assume that this is a sign of rejection or denial. Also, give your friends and family the chance to talk with you, to discuss their feelings and opinions. You do not have to invite in bigotry or any other negative thoughts, but some people may feel better if they have the option of sharing how they feel, as well.
Once all this is said and done, you will need proceed on with your life, no matter what the results are. While it is fantastic to have those you love one hundred percent behind you, this may not always be the case, no matter what your sexual orientation is. If your friends and family are happy and satisfied, then you will have a strong support system behind you. On the other hand, if there are people you know who are not accepting of your dating lifestyle, you may have to realize it is time for you to move on. These people may believe they care for you, but if they cannot accept who you fundamentally are, as a person, then it may be in your best interest to continue on with your life.
What is most important is to emotionally protect yourself from any unnecessary negativity. Surround yourself with people who love and accept you, regardless of who you are and where your life goes. By being honest and keeping communication open and flowing, you may have the best opportunity for happiness and acceptance from those who are important to you.
