What Manners Are Appropriate on Dates?
While the dating world may seem foreign, there are certain manners and behaviors you can follow to make sure you know what's appropriate today.
Both rookies and experienced daters find themselves a bit confused about what's appropriate today. People may wonder how they should act, who should open the doors, who pays for the date and what happens at the end of the evening.
Because values shift from one person to another, it is important to follow few guidelines to remain on the safe side. Discuss confusing aspects with your date, such as whether to pick them up or meet. Be certain to be clear about what you want. If you prefer to pay your own way or to treat your date to the meal or activity, speak up. By allowing yourself to be heard and deciding together how the date should be handled, you may avoid misunderstandings.
If you aren't certain whether a particuar behavior is appropriate, err on the side of caution. Open the door for your dates, pull out their chairs and allow them to place their order first. Your date will or should tell you if something you do makes the uncomfortable. Besides, one thing to keep in mind is good manners never go out of style.
While you may feel thoroughly confused about manners and behavior in the dating world, be assured that your date is probably struggling with the same qualms. As stressful as a date can be, especially a first one, it is important to relax and do something that you enjoy, whether it is having dinner, bowling or going to the theatre. As you get to know the person you are dating, you will have a better understanding of what kind of dating etiquette is appropriate for the individual situation and person.
